An Administration Police officer was rushed to hospital after reportedly inhaling mysterious substance from a handbag belonging to an Ethiopian woman he had arrested.
The officer had arrested 19-year-old Kidest Mebtrapu Adeta after receiving information she was carrying materials used in making explosives.
It is alleged that the officer was tipped by boda boda operators and took quick action to apprehend the suspect along 11th Street of Second Avenue in Eastleigh.
The officer, while attempting to search the suspect’s handbag, saw a polythene bag hidden in the bag. When he touched it, white substance similar to smoke wafted into his eyes and blurred his vision temporarily.
His colleagues claim the officer was unable to see until he received treatment after the January 12 incident. The suspect was taken to Pangani Police Station where bomb experts forwarded the substance to the Government Chemist for analysis. Kamukunji sub-county AP commander Adamson Bungei said his officers at first panicked.
“Our officer is okay after being attended to in hospital. We call on the public to continue being vigilant and volunteer such useful information,” said Bungei.
