Angelina Jolie files for divorce from Brad Pitt after 12 years together
Brad Pitt has broken his silence after it emerged his wife of two years Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce following 12 years together.
The actress submitted papers to end the couple's marriage on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences for their split.
According to reports, Angelina is seeking physical custody of their six children, Maddox, 15, Pax, 12, Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and twins Knox and Vivienne, eight, but wants a judge to give the 52-year-old actor visitation rights.
"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," he said in a statement given to People.
While a source told the magazine that the split has come as a huge shock, sharing: "They have definitely spent more time apart this year, but it's still a shock. They just celebrated their wedding anniversary together."
Angelina is being represented by Laura Wasser, who recently represented Johnny Depp in his split from Amber Heard, and is not asking for spousal support.
The state of the couple's relationship has been the subject of wild speculation for years with insiders claiming they lived separate lives and had frequent bitter rows.
Angelina cited September 15 as the date of their official separation. Brad was still wearing his wedding ring when he was seen on September 9.
After news of their divorce broke, gossip sites in the US began to speculate that Brad's friendship with Allied co-star Marion Cottilard had put extra strain on his marriage.
According to Page Six, Angelina had hired a private eye to watch her husband. "He's in the throes of a midlife crisis, and Angie is fed up," a source told the website.
The couple fell for each other while filming Mr and Mrs Smith in 2004 when Brad was still married to Friends star Jennifer Aniston.
They went public with their relationship a year later but only tied the knot on in August 2014 in a surprise ceremony at their French estate.
