Meet Zeritu Kebede – Rising Ethiopian Singer, Actress and Screenwriter


Zeritu Kebede Woldegiorgis was born in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa on February 19, 1984 from an architect father Kebede and a housewife mother, Engida Mitiku.

Zeritu became interested in music since childhood. She went on stage for the first time while she was a 5th grader, singing a Michael Jackson’s, “Will you be there?” In her high school class, Zeritu and her friends made their first money from ‘Yegeterua Emebet,’ a song they co-wrote and performed that focuses on the issue of early and forced marriage.

After high school, Zeritu has joined several bands in different clubs and played songs of Celine Dion, Tracey Chapman, Mariah Carey, Lauryn Hill, Shania Twain, Norah Jones and Shakira. While working at with the Music bands, Zeritu joined Adama University. But she has dropped out and decided to fully focus on music After half a semester. She then joined Holy-land Art academy, where she was trained in acting and script writing for a year and a half.

In 2004, Zeritu was offered a part on a group song, Mela, that was being produced for raising awareness on HIV/AIDS written by Michael Belayneh and Yilma Gebreab and produced by Elias Melka which also involved legendary singers like Menilik Wosinachew, Alemayehu Eshete, and Tamirat Mola.

In September 2005, Zeritu released a self-titled album. Following her album release, Zeritu went on a national tour ‘Guzo Zeritu’ starting March 2006 to April 2006, and performed in major Ethiopian cities including Addis Ababa, Adama, Hawassa, Dire-Dawa, Harar, Bahir-Dar, Jimma, Mekele, Dessie and Gondar.

In 2007, Zeritu played an important role in the production of Eyob Mekonnen album.

In last months of 2007, Zeritu toured the United States with the Mehari Brothers and played on a few stages in Europe and UAE.

In December 2012, Zeritu begin a new career in acting and film production when she began the production of the film ‘Kemis Yelebesku’let,’ that was released in January 12, 2014.

Zeritu is currently in production of her third film, ‘Pagumen,’ which she wrote, and will co-produce.

Zeritu Kebede has been married to Lakachew Mengistu Worku, a football player and a business man, since 2005. They are parents of three boys, Kristian, Mengistu and Tselot.

Zeritu has found faith and became the follower of Jesus Christ but belongs to no religious organization. She says she believes in just following Jesus Christ and striving to live according to the Word of God.
