Ethiopia PM inaugurates Al Amoudi Stadium in Weldiya


Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn today officially inaugurated a modern stadium in the town of Weldiya (ወልዲያ), some 315 miles from Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. The stadium which is named after its financier Sheik Mohammed Al Amoudi was built at a cost of 500 Million Ethiopian Birr ($22 Million USD) and has a seating capacity of 26,000, according to state-run media EBC.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Hailemariam said the stadium meets international standard from FIFA and IAAF and can be used to host international football and athletics events. It has 10 entrance gates, a swimming pool, an eight lane competition track as well as basketball, handball, volleyball and tennis courts. It is reportedly Ethiopia’s first stadium fitted with roof.

Ethiopian born Sheik Mohammed Al Amoudi is one of the world’s richest person and has vast business enterprises in Ethiopia, Sweden, Morocco among others. Forbes magazine estimates his net worth as $10.9 Billion. Sheik Al Amoudi was born in Dessie and brought up in Weldiya.
