Woman Stabs 9-Month-Old During A Fight With Baby's Mother

New Orleans police have arrested a woman who they say stabbed a 9 monthold girl in St. Roch Monday afternoon. Edwardnisha Raiford, 22, has been booked on an attempted first degree murder charge for stabbing the baby, and an aggravated battery charge for stabbing another victim during a large fight that left the baby and three other victims injured, said NOPD spokeswoman Ambria Washington.

Raiford was arrested at about 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 1700 block of Mandeville Street after detectives identified her as the person responsible for injuring the baby. The brawl left the four victims with “non-life-threatening” knife wounds. Raiford told detectives that while targeting an “unknown female” holding the baby, she mistakenly “hit the baby with a knife,” police said.

She was booked into the Orleans Parish jail at 5 p.m. Witness Stacy Mason said she saw the baby being stabbed during the fight, which she said started with a man and a woman outside Jack’s Meat Market and grew to include about 15 people. Mason said the baby’s mother, who is her cousin, was involved in the fight but was not holding the baby when the girl was hurt.
Another woman, who Mason did not recognize, was holding the baby when the stabbing occurred, she said. Detectives are working to identify additional culprits in the fight, which involved two groups of people at the intersection of Mandeville and North Derbigny streets. During the brawl, members of one group brandished knives and another member of the same group fired gunshots, the NOPD said.
Along with the baby, two women and a man also suffered knife wounds. No injuries were reported from gunfire, police said. Mason said she called police after the baby was stabbed — and she saw the baby’s head covered in blood. “You couldn’t even see her face,” she said of the girl.
