Ethiopia Builds 4 Agro Processing Industrial Parks


Ethiopia’s Ministry of Industry (MoI) discloses it aims to build 4 major integrated agro industrial parks at an outlay of 1.5 billion USD.

The parks are going to be built separate from the ongoing industrial parks development projects which are spearheaded by the Industrial Parks Development Corporation (IPDC).

Commenting on the issue Mebrahtu Meles (PhD), State Minister of Industry, said the agro processing industrial parks would be developed by states with the support of the federal government. From the entire 1.5 billion Birr, 870 million would be spent on infrastructural and processing plants development activities, he added.

According to Mebrahtu Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and Southern Nation Nationalities and Peoples (SNNP) are the states where the initial phase of the project will take place and some 154 hectares of land has been allocated for this purpose. Other than these states Somali and Afar has also be selected for the establishment of agro industrial parks.

The agro industrial parks would be established at the heart of primary harvest areas in the country granting them access to agricultural products which are major ingredients to processing industries, the State Minister added.

Ethiopia aims to boost agro processing subsector’s share to cover 6.7 percent of the nation’s GDP.
