In the last two years, these Ethiopians that embraced foreign identities through adoption, naturalization, and second generation citizenship have fascinated use, represented the best of us and temporarily distracted us from the negative stereotypes some ignorant foreigners throw at us.
1- Abel Tesfaye, aka, The Weeknd, born February 16, 1990
The Weeknd is probably the biggest name in the music industry right now and he dominated the billboard for many weeks following the release of his album “Beauty behind the Madness”
His real name is Abel Tesfaye and he is an Ethiopian Canadian
2- Gedion Zelalem, born January 26, 1997
Gedion Zelalem is an Ethiopian American rising football star currently playing as a midfielder for Scottish Championship side Rangers, on loan from Premier League club Arsenal. He is part of the US National Team and has played for Germany’s under 17 before he became American.
3- Yityish Aynaw, born 1992
Yityish “Titi” Aynaw is an Ethiopian Israeli model who won the title of Miss Israel in 2013. She is the first Ethiopian-born Jew to win the contest. Aynaw is also the first black Miss Israel winner. The Jerusalem Post has named her as the 39th most influential Jew in the World
4- Maaza Mengiste, born 1971
Maaza is an Ethiopian American whose debut novel, the award-winning Beneath the Lion’s Gaze was named one of the 10 best contemporary African books by The Guardian.She is currently a visiting assistant professor at Queens College of the City University of New York.
5- Marcus Samuelson (Kassahun Tsegie), born 1971
Marcus Samuelson is an Ethiopian Swedish chef and restaurateur residing in the US. He was born Kassahun Tsegie and was adopted by Swedish family at an early age. He has cooked for the White House, published a number of books and appears in television shows as a guest.

Lemn Sissay is an Ethiopian Britsih author, poet and broadcaster. He was elected Chancellor of the University of Manchester for a seven-year term in 2015. Sissay spend part of his life in foster famil and children house and met his birth mother at the age of 21
