Addis Ababa University Hosts Switzerland Delegation

A high level delegation from Switzerland led by the State Secretary for Education visited Ethiopia and held talks with the top management of Addis Ababa University (AAU) on January 13, 2015 at the AAU Senate Hall.

The Swiss delegation and the AAU management deliberated on their 40 years of partnership and prospects for more collaborative work in the future.

The Swiss government supports Ethiopia in various areas. Action research on environmental degradation and sustainable land management is one of these areas with its support dating back since 1980 through the Center for Development and Environment (CDE) of Bern University.

This long standing commitment led to the establishment of the Water and Land Resource Center which has recently been autonomously affiliated with the Addis Ababa University upon the Senate’s approval. The CDE was instrumental in setting up the research wing of the Water and Land Resource Center.

Admasu Tsegaye (PhD), President of Addis Ababa University, briefed the delegation on a few of the University’s successful centers of excellence. He also told the delegation that the center is earmarked for fruition with the assistance of the Swiss Government and that its impact is set to be felt further than the University.

Dr. Admasu Tsegaye also explained the position of the AAU within Ethiopia and East Africa regarding research over the Nile, a resource mutually important for all riparian states. He elaborated on the University’s stance to form consortium with higher learning institutions and negotiators in the region.

State Secretary Mauro Dell’Ambrogio, for his part, expressed his appreciation for the efficient work the AAU has undertaken through the center in short period of time and the University’s overall research based approach towards supporting the development efforts of the country.

Highlighting the profound collaborative efforts made with the University of Bern and the Swiss government, Dr. Tassew Woldehanna, Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer of the Addis Ababa University and the focal person of the Center told the delegation that Addis Ababa University is proud to be associated with the University of Bern and the Government of Switzerland in the areas of water and land resources and beyond.
