Abel Tesfaye, The Weeknd Hit Records Are Taking YouTube By Storm

Artist Abel Tesfaye, a.k.a The Weeknd, has taken the video sharing website YouTube by storm with his hit records ‘The Hill’, ‘Often’ and ‘Can’t Feel My Face.’ As of today, ‘The Hills’ has more than 153 million views on YouTube.

This probably makes him an artist with Ethiopian descent who has the highest number of international views ever on YouTube and Vevo.

Abel was born in 1990 in Scarborough, Ontario and he is now a top rated Canadian R & B singer, songwriter and record producer. He is of Ethiopian descent; his parents emigrated from Ethiopia to Canada in the 1980s.

Since Abel’s father was never around when he was growing up, and his mother was constantly working, his grandmother took care of him most of his young life. Because of this, Abel speaks fluent Amharic and it was the first language he learned.

In late 2010, Abel anonymously uploaded several songs to YouTube under the name "The Weeknd". He released three nine-track mixtapes throughout 2011 which were critically acclaimed. The following year, he released a compilation album Trilogy, consisting of remastered versions of the mixtape material and three additional songs.

It was released under Republic Records and his own label XO. In 2013, he released his debut studio album Kiss Land. His second album was Beauty Behind the Madness, which has produced top-five singles, including his number-one single, “Can’t Feel My Face”.

The Weeknd has received praise from several music publications, including MTB, BET, Rolling Stone, XXL and The Source.
