South Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement Re-Elects Hailemariam Desalegn As Chairperson

The South Ethiopian Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM) has concluded its 9th organizational conference re-electing Hailemariam Desalegn as Chairperson of the Movement.

Shiferaw Shigute was elected as Deputy Chairperson. The Movement also elected 65 central committee members.

The conference, on its third day, assessed performance of the first 5-year Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP).

The conference evaluated the efforts made to improve agricultural productivity and ensure food security as encouraging.

Crop production increased to 34.3 million quintals in 2007 EC harvest season from 23.27 million in 2002 EC, it said.

The annual Enset and root crops production, the major food crops in Southern Ethiopia, also increased to 74.2 million quintals from 35 million, it added.

The agricultural sector witnessed an 8.7 per cent annual growth in the regional state. Production of gainful cash crops recorded a 9.4 per cent average annual growth rate.

Regarding the industry sector, small and micro enterprises (SMEs) created jobs for 1.06 million youth, it noted.

The conference also highlighted the need to do more to strengthen the manufacturing sector, narrow the gap created among farmers in productivity, expand infrastructure and maintain education and health qualities. 

In line with the SEPDM’s succession strategy, Dr Kassu Ilala retired from the central committee member.

SEPDM Chairman, Hailemariam Desalegn, said Dr Kassu was a person who worked to bring development, equality and democracy to the people.

Dr Kassu had served as central committee member of the Ethiopian People's Democratic Movement (EPDM) and chairman of the Gurage Peoples’ Movement as well as SEPDM(FBC).
