AN eye specialist has volunteered to help improve the living conditions of blind and partially sighted children in Ethiopia.

Optometrist Jo Sheetal-Thethy is raising awareness about the healthcare problems experienced by the children she helped at the Mekelle School for the Blind in Tigray province in the north of Ethiopia.

She helped screen the children, many of whom were suffering from preventable trachoma or river blindness during her two week trip.

Miss Sheetal-Thethy, who is the resident optometrist at the Optegra Eye Hospital in Colindale said she had only seen these conditions in textbooks when she trained at Aston University in Birmingham before she began volunteering with sight charities overseas in 2008.
