Ethio Telecom terminated the contract that it has with Swedish-based telecom firm on the expansion of telecom projects, mentioning slow performance.

Ethio Telecom said, the multi-billion Birr expansion project has already been re-awarded to Chinese firm, Huawei.

“We have already taken one of the four circles, south-south project, which we awarded to Ericsson last year.

But the company has failed to live up to the agreement and we had to award it to Huawei,” Abdurahim Ahmed, Corporate Communication heard of the Ethio Telecom told The Reporter.

“The basic reason is that Ericsson has failed to implement the project as per the deadline that was put in place in the agreement,” he explained.

Huawei was given the project because of the performance it showed during the project expansion project it executed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Abdurhim noted.

“The basic reason is that Ericsson has failed to implement the project as per the deadline that was put in place in the agreement,” he said.

Besides the Addis Ababa project, Huawei currently is handling six circles of the expansion program in Ethiopia including, north, north-east, north-west, east and afar area projects.
