The Government of Japan has donated 11.8 million USD for humanitarian activity to support South Sudanese refugees and local host population in Gambella through the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), World Food Programme (WFP) and World Health Organization (WHO).

According to a press release sent to The Ethiopian Herald, a joint press conference was held Wednesday in the presence of Gambella State President, Gatlauk Tut Khat, and Kazuhiro Suzuki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia and UNHCR, WFP and WHO.

On the occasion, Ambassador Suzuki said that out of the total donation, 5.8 million USD will be allocated to the UNHCR to set up a new refugee camp in Gambella State as there is an urgent need to accommodate the rising number of refugees and address the damage inflicted on their camps due to flooding.
