Pablo Escobar's family, Colombia's Serna charged in probe

An Argentine judge charged the widow and son of Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar with being part of a criminal organization devoted to money laundering, Argentina's official judicial news agency said Tuesday.

Former Colombia soccer international Mauricio Serna also was charged.

Victoria Henao, Juan Pablo Escobar Henao and Serna are accused of being intermediaries in Argentina for Colombian drug dealer Jose Piedrahita to launder money through real estate and a cafe known for its Tango performances.

Piedrahita was arrested in Colombia in September and is wanted for extradition to the United States.

Serna is a former midfielder who helped Boca Juniors win South America's Copa Libertadores in 2000 and 2001. The team won the 2000 Intercontinental Cup by beating Real Madrid. He was a regular with Colombia's national team.

The Escobar family has lived in Argentina since the 1990s.

They can appeal the decision by local judge Nestor Barral, who also ordered the seizing of some of their assets for about $1 million each.

Escobar and Maria Henao married in 1976, when the drug-lord was 26 and his bride was only 15. They eloped.

The two had two children together.

Drug baron Escobar was shot dead by police at the age of 44 in 1993, bringing to an end his ruthless control of the Medellin Cartel.

Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was a Colombian drug trafficker.

During his time at the helm of the Medellin Cartel he controlled over 80 per cent of the cocaine shipped to the US.

Escobar entered the cocaine trade in the early 1970s, collaborating with other criminals to form the Medellin Cartel.

Despite his role as a drug lord Escobar earned popularity by sponsoring charity projects and soccer clubs.

However terror campaigns run by Escobar resulted in the murder of thousands turned the public against him.  

By the mid-1980s, Pablo Escobar had an estimated net worth of $30 billion and cash was so prevalent that Escobar purchased a Learjet for the sole purpose of flying his money.  

More than 15 tons of cocaine were reportedly smuggled each day, netting the Cartel as much as $420 million a week.

Colombian law enforcement finally caught up to Pablo Escobar on December 2, 1993 in a middle-class neighborhood in Medellin. 

A firefight ensued and, as Escobar tried to escape across a series of rooftops, he and his bodyguard were shot and killed.
