Former Republican nominee Mitt Romney had a little fun with the fact that Donald Trump has been married thrice and two of his spouses are foreign-born.

Romney, who is actively campaigning against a Trump presidency, participated in an onstage Q&A conducted by his former running mate, House Speaker Paul Ryan, at a giant closed-door fundraiser last night in Washington put on by the National Republican Congressional Committee.

'Donald Trump has had several foreign wives,' Romney began, according to tweets from Kris Hammond, a D.C.-based attorney and Republican party delegate. 'It turns out that there ... really are jobs Americans won't do.'

Both Trump's first and third wife were born overseas, with Ivana Trump, who the billionaire divorced in 1992, heralding from the Czech Republic and his current wife Melania being born in Yugoslavia, now Slovenia.

Second wife Marla Maples, who he was married to from 1993 to 1999, is an American.

In another quip, Ryan asked Romney about comments Trump recently made that questioned whether the former Massachusetts governor was really a Mormon.

'All he had to do was ask my wives,' Romney joked, slightly mocking the common stereotype bestowed upon his Mormon faith.

If the first joke had a familiar ring to it, it's because a similar line has been deployed against Trump before.

Comedian George Lopez posted lines like Romney's to his Facebook page in November.

'You know all of Donald Trump's wives have come from other countries as immigrants,' Lopez said. 'That just shows you that women are still coming to this country to do the jobs that Americans don't wanna do!'

While Mitt Romney joked about having 'wives,' in reality he's been married 47 years to his wife Ann who was an asset on the campaign trail when the former governor ran for president in 2012

This wasn't the first time this week that Trump was needled about his spouse.

In a much harsher attack, the anti-Trump political action committee Make America Awesome released a photograph showing a nude Melania Trump – the model was posing for an issue of GQ – which the group turned into a meme that said, 'Meet Melania Trump, your next First Lady. Or you could vote for Ted Cruz on Tuesday.'

Trump was unsurprisingly appalled and lashed out, but placed blame on his rival Ted Cruz.

On Twitter he wrote: 'Lyin' Ted Cruz just used a picture of Melania from a G.Q. shoot in his ad. Be careful, Lyin' Ted, or I will spill the beans on your wife!'

This prompted a back and forth between the two camps with Cruz's wife Heidi even spouting off to reporters several times today.

Cruz, perhaps taking a page from The Donald's pop culture-friendly persona, channeled the fictional President Andrew Shepherd from the Aaron Sorkin film 'The American President.'

'And if Donald wants to get into a character fight, he's better off sticking with me,' Cruz said, 'Because Heidi is way out of his league.'
