Five Europa nightclub cashiers in Sunnyside were arrested on Thursday for allegedly swindling the business of more than a hundred thousands.

Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela, said the five were charged on suspicion of embezzling more than R126 000 within a two week period.

“The men aged between 18 to 26 years were caught in a sting operation late on Thursday night. It is believed that the suspects achieved their exploits by reproducing and misrepresenting receipts from previous sales, which showed a conflict [shortfall] between the club’s receipts and banked income,” Mavimbela said.

He said the investigation was launched after a tip off from a senior employee at the club.

“The suspects will be charged with fraud,” Mavimbela said.
“The allegations against the Europa cashiers highlight the need for the local businesses to intensify their theft-deterrent strategies, which are specific to the individual retailer, nature of business and existing security measures.”

Sunnyside station commander, Brigadier Ramakamakama Kekana said it was essential for businesses to monitor their daily revenue.

“The increased usage of the mobile speed points also calls for local businesses to reconcile their daily income much more regularly in order to detect discrepancies much earlier,” said Kekana.

The five were expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

A representative of the club said: “No comment from us, we are currently busy with investigations.”
