Ethiopia’s reformist Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed is in Eritrea on unannounced visit according to report from Fana, a government affiliated media. The Prime Minister arrived in Asmara earlier today after visiting the port cities of Assab and Massawa.
Local media also reported that Ethiopian ship today docked on Eritrean port of Massawa after two decades.
The ship, called “Mekelle” arrived in Massawa from Saudi Arabia. It will carry 11,000 tonnes of Eritrea’s Zinc to China.
The vessel was built in 2013. Ethiopia has 12 cargo and two container ships built with loans from the Chinese government.
All the ships are named after the capital cities of Ethiopia’s regional states.
Abiy expressed his deep appreciation of ongoing preparatory work by the Eritrean government to enhance port services and related road infrastructure, according to Yemane Gebremeskel, Eritrea’s Information Minister.
“Progress in this component augurs well for efforts of both sides to ensure full implementation of all five pillars of the agreement,” he said.
Eritrea is hosting a tripartite summit for the leaders of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia. The leaders are expected to hold talks on various issues and ways to strengthen their ties.
Ethiopia will also open its embassy in Asmara officially tomorrow and Redwan Hussien is appointed as its ambassador to Eritrea.
