Airport taxis, which move tourists and visitors, are to be replaced by 2015 model vans. The replacement is effected with the intention of bringing the taxi transport up to the standard, indicated the Amharic Weekly, Reporter.

Five taxi Unions, with four hundred members, proposed the idea to reinstate the existing yellow taxis with a new Japan made Toyota Avanza vans which can hold eight passengers at once.

Ministry of transport delightfully received the proposal and decided to let the Unions import the new model vans free of tax.

The Ministry has also prepared a new directive to control and delimit Taxi transport service provisions at and around the airport.

Blue taxis which drive outside the Unions, however, have complaints of unfairness and discrimination, by airport security, at and around the airport.

Anonymous source confirmed that there is a newly organized union at the airport, and also unions are connected to airport security officials. There is conflict of interest between the blue and yellow taxis.

A taxi driver told DireTube that there are Porters, Federal police inspector and even airport security officers who own yellow Taxi. That is why blue taxis are not allowed to work along with the yellow taxis at the airport

The Unions reserved the airport area transport service to Union members alone with an iron fist, even if there is no legal ground to favor this.

There are reports of frequent beatings and abuses of blue taxi drivers by airport security. Will the new directive heed this conflict along with standardizing transport?
