The Ethiopian National Anti-Doping Organization (ETH-NADO) banned two long distance runners from taking part in competitions for four to twelve years, due to tampering and doping.

In a press release sent to the media on December 24, 2020, Wondesen Ketema and Eyob Habtesillassie have been banned from participating in sporting events.

Wondessen was provisionally suspended until February 1, 2024 after testing positive for Cathinone. However, the athlete was also under investigation for various misdemeanors, disrupting the investigation process and attempting to defraud officials.

Thus, in addition to the previous four year ban, the first sentence was extended from February 1, 2024 to February 2032.

Meanwhile, Eyob, who had also tested positive for Cathinone, has been banned for four years. Eyob was underprovisional suspension due to the ongoing investigation.

Eth-NADO pointed out that the investigation will continue.

It is to be recalled that Eth-NADO had unveiled a sanction which can be enforced on other sporting bodies. The Eth-NADO stated that the government has the authority to take additional disciplinary actions under article 12.

President of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe, underlined that it will be more difficult than ever before to cheat at the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. He warned high-profile track and field athletes that their status will no longer shield them from drug tests.
