The Ministry of Health (MoH) warned the Betking Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) share company over breach of the COVID-19 protocol, The Reporter has learnt.

The share company which is playing the first five fixtures in Addis Ababa stadium received warning after it failed to take precautions against COVID-19 during a match, the league share company said.

The warning came after Hossana striker Dawa Hottesa celebrated a goal on match week two against Bahir Dar City with spectators. Dawa was given a red card for over celebrating.

The Betking EPL, which kicked off on December 12, 2020, is being played behind closed doors. Kifle Seife, Ethiopian Premier League Share Company General Manager, told The Reporter that spectators will not be allowed to enter the stadium in the next matches.

Ahead of this year’s premier league season, the MoH issued a protocol to prevent the outbreak of COVID-19. Nevertheless, the Ministry warned that a decision could be made to cancel the league if these protocols were not followed. Accordingly, the MOH urged clubs to be vigilant.

Following the MoH warning, league matches will be played in Addis Ababa stadium and Bahir Dar and Jimma will host the next five fixtures.
