Doha: The ‘Plant Million Tree’ initiative of the Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) received yet another boost as ambassadors of United States, Canada, Ethiopia, Mexico and Tanzania planted saplings of different trees in Legtaifiya Park, yesterday.

The green initiative, which was launched in 2019, has helped plant thousands of trees with the participation of ministers, ambassadors, schools, community leaders, public and private companies during different events.

Ambassadors and officials pose after planting saplings of different trees in Legtaifiya Park, yesterday.

The initiative focuses on planting saplings of trees suited for Qatari climate, such as Sidr, Ghaf, Samar and many more. Under the initiative, trees are being planted at highways, industrial areas, sewage plants, treatment units and storage, rainwater harvesting sites, cities and municipal strips, public parks, schools, and residential complexes.

The event at Legtaifiya Park was organised by the Public Parks Department of MME with the participation of a number of embassies.

Chargé d’Affaires of the US Embassy in Doha, H E Greta C Holtz; Ambassador of Canada to Qatar H E Stefanie McCollum; Ambassador of Mexico, H E Graciela Gomez Garcia; Ambassador of the United Republic of Tanzania to Qatar, H E Fatma Mohamed Rajab; Ambassador of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, H E Samia Zakaria Gutu and Director of the Public Parks Department, Muhammad Ali Al Khouri planted the saplings during the event.

The initiative is open to all communities, institutions, governmental agencies, private sector, corporate sector, schools, educational entities, youth centers, sport clubs, and all citizens and expatriates.

Interested people including individuals, companies and organisations can register in the initiative through financial or in-kind support or scientific contribution, via e-mail — the Ministry’s Application on smartphones — the Initiative Section at any mall.

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment had launched a dedicated website https://www.mme.gov.qa/static/million-tree/ to boost the initiative ‘Plant Million Tree’ where people can contribute to the Initiative with different seedlings and pay online.
