Officials inaugurate training center, honor past athletes
The Ethiopian Athletics Federation (EAF) elected Derartu Tulu as President. Derartu served as the Federation’s interim President since 2018 before she was formally elected this week to lead it for the coming four years.
The EAF announced 27 votes out of 28 went to the Olympic legend. Her contender for the position was a representative from Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Region (SNNP). However, after submitting a resignation letter to the EAF ridding himself of the race to the top position, it opened a chance for Derartu to be elected without a contender.
Preparing the athletics team for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics is expected to be a priority for Derartu in the coming months.
Alongside the election, the EAF’s 24th general assembly was held and last year’s budget and audit report was presented to executive committee members.
In addition, the EAF President Derartu and various top officials inaugurated a training center for athletes constructed in Legetafo and built at a cost of over 17 million birr. It includes, among others, a 1.6km sand field and a 400m sand track.
In other news, the EAF held a flower-laying ceremony at St. Joseph’s Church, where the tombs of legendary athlete Abebe Bikila and Mamo Welde are located. A ceremony was also held for Miruts Yefetir, Coach WoldeMesekel Kostre(Dr.) and veteran journalist Demise Damte.
Elsewhere, the EAF awarded a total of 2 million birr to all regional federations, city administrations, and various clubs depending on their performance last year. EAF also announced that local competitions are set to take place based on the regular calendar, taking into consideration COVID-19 guidelines.
