Only 13 clubs will compete this season
The Ethiopian Premier League (EPL) 2020/21 season is set to resume today. In today’s match, St. George will face Fasil City, while Sebeta take on Dire Dawa in the opening fixtures of the season in Addis Ababa stadium.
Following the Coronavirus-induced suspension of the league, EPL clubs were unable to finish the 2019/20 season, after the country announced a state of emergency in March 2019. The weekly football games were postponed after match week 17.
Following the cancellation of the 2019/20 EPL season, the Ethiopian Football Federation (EFF) decided that no clubs will participate in the Africa Championships and CAF Confederation Cup.
It has, however, reversed that decision after discussions with club representatives and the government to send two clubs into the continental competitions.
The EPL share company announced its first round of fixtures featuring only 13 clubs, after three Tigray region clubs have been dropped due to the war against the government.
According to the statement by the EPL share company, there will be 13 clubs for the 2020/21 season and three clubs will be relegated at the end of the competition. Apart from that, the three relegated clubs will be replaced by three teams from league one.
Mekele City, Suhul Shire and Welwalo Adigrat University will join the league next season (2021/22).
For this season, 156 games will be played in three stadiums. Addis Ababa stadium, Bahir Dar international stadium and Jimma stadium have been selected to host the 2020/21 EPL season games.
On Sunday, Ethiopia Coffee will take on Wolkite while Jimma Aba Jiffar will face Adama City.
In related news, the EPL games will be transmitted live on DSTV for the first time. It is to be remembered that DSTV won the right to broadcast live EPL football matches signing a five year deal with the EPL Share Company.
Betking will be the Title sponsor for Ethiopian Premier League.
Betking is a digital entertainment and sport technology business that owns and operates its own propriety platform and product portfolio.
During the signing, it was announced that the deal is set to benefit all the teams participating in the league and that the situation directly impacts and benefits the players.
Furthermore, the aim of the investment is for SuperSport to continue building sport broadcasting capability in the country. With this in mind, SuperSport is to invest in building infrastructure, enabling quality footage for broadcast while simultaneously building opportunities for skills development, training and knowledge sharing.
DSTV agreed to pay four million to five million USD annually. A total of 60 matches will be broadcast with a majority of the games devoid of coverage.
